Denise Holloway, 4 My Curls

Denise Holloway will be the first to tell you that there’s no such thing as ‘curly’ hair – a surprising statement from someone with a long flowing locks. But the owner of online hair products retailer, 4 My Curls (, says there are countless different types of curly hair: there’s wavy, kinky, coily…and many more. And each requires its own special cleansing, nourishing and styling products.

A USA ex-pat living in Australia, Denise owns and runs an online store that imports a wide range of hair care products from the USA, specifically catering for Australian women who want to embrace the curl!

Where did the idea for your business come from?

“Having curly hair myself, I noticed a lack of products specialising in curly or natural hair in Australia. I found it rather frustrating trying to find anything suitable that worked for my hair and would resort to having my sister ship products from the US for me to use here!”

What does a normal day look like for you?

“I read all my emails first thing in the morning, then off to work - I also work full-time. I drop off orders from previous day, and then home by 5:30. More emails and processing days orders, ready to be shipped for the next day. Receive in any stock shipments that have arrived from overseas and place any reorders with my suppliers.”

What role does social media and marketing play in your business success?

“Social media and marketing play a huge role in the success of my business. If done properly, it’s a very cheap and effective way of promoting one’s business.”

Who do you admire and why?

“There isn’t one particular person that I admire, but it would be any woman out there juggling it all, working full time as well as raising a family!”

What are your major challenges?

“Finding enough hours in the day. I also need to learn to be more disciplined in planning out my weekly Instagram and Facebook posts so that I am not doing this last minute. The marketing of any business is key for it to be successful.”

What advice do you have for other women starting a business?

“Just go for it! Make sure to do your research beforehand and have a plan in place. When people offer to help, say yes!”
